Lake Caliraya, Lumban & Cavinti
One of the most prominent man-made attractions in the provinces
stretching from Lumban to Cavinti, Lake Caliraya is actually a large
reservoir built in 1943 to supply water to the Caliraya Hydroelectric
Plant. As the dams were constructed, entrepreneurs with foresight
created two adjacent communities, which were envision being ecological
communities, where one can enjoy the beauty and richness unspoiled
nature. The results were man-made mountain, lakes complete with
coves and sand bars – Lake Caliraya and Sierra Lakes.
The
waters of the lake measuring about 50 meters at its deepest, and
the strong mountain breeze that blows from the Sierra Madre Mountain
Ranges and the distant Mt. Banahaw, make Lake Caliraya an ideal
place for aqua sports such as boating, wind surfing and water-skiing.
The lake is also excellent for sailing and game fishing. A boat
trip around the lake would take approximately four hours. There
are tourist establishments in the area that provide accommodation

hand-embroidered barong is an art passed on from generation to generation.

The more intricate designs on jusi (a kind of fabric) are more expensive
that the ones made on santana (another kind of fabric). Barong makers
and shops proliferate in this town.
7.
Paete’s Woodcarving, Paete
There is a proliferation of woodcarving ranging from small to large
scale. Practically all the town folks are involved in this business,
either as factory workers or owners – a tradition that has
been passed on from generation. The artistic ingenuity of Paete
reputedly dates back to the pre-Spanish period, during which, the
artists created mostly religious articles.
Skillful
artisans patiently fashion lanite, amlang, kamagong, lauan, acacia
and santol wood into world-class miniature décor items. The
old creations of Paete are among the most valued antiques today.
At present, Paete’s artists carve not only religious figures
but also genre masterpieces, furniture and just about anything imaginable.
The hard work that each Paete artist devotes to his craft indeed
puts meaning to the words “made in Paete”. |
