Laguna Gov. Teresita “Ningning” Lazaro, during this mornings Monday flag raising ceremony at the Provincial Capitol in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, commends the province’s young delegates in the recently concluded week-long National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) last February in Surigao City.

Laguna struggled against some 5,000 leading public and private elementary and secondary school campus journalists from 17 regions in this recent annual staging of NSPC of the Department of Education (DepEd).

Gov. Lazaro particularly congratulates Grade IV pupil Camille Ida Rodique Cortez of Matee Ecclesias Elementary School, San Pedro, Laguna as 2nd Placer in Editorial Science Reporting (English) and 5th Placer in Feature Writing (English); 4th Year student Everly Faith P. Ramos of Pedro Guevara Memorial National High School in Sta. Cruz, Laguna as 5th Placer in News Writing (English); and 3rd Year student Grace Parreño of Gulod National High School in Cabuyao, Laguna.

In group awards, Santisima Cruz Elementary School in Sta. Cruz, Laguna received the 3rd Place Tanging Lathalain Award; Timbao Elementary School in Biñan, Laguna received the 4th Place Tanging Lathalain Award; and Biñan Central Elementary School received the 5th Place News Page Award.

Gov. Lazaro pledged a P2000-cash incentive to the promising young journalists of Laguna and vows to pursue her priority programs on education and youth welfare.

DepEd Region IV-A Director George Garma said the staging of the NSPC, considered the mental counterpart of the Palarong Pambanasa, the country’s premier sportsfest, is in line with the Campus Journalism Act, which institutionalized campus journalism in all public and private schools.

NSPC is highlighted by individual writing competitions, namely, news writing, feature writing, sports writing, editorial writing, copyreading and headline writing, photojournalism and editorial cartooning. The writing derbies are preceded by lectures on various forms of writing by prominent national media practitioners. It also features group contests where the country’s best school newspapers are selected largely based on their editorial contests. # (PIO-Laguna)
