Carabao Upgrading Program Expands Area of Coverage

The Carabao Upgarding Program (CUP) which piloted in municipalities of Sta. Cruz, Magdalena, Pagsanjan and San Pablo City has now extended to 11 other more municipalities namely Bay, Pakil, Pangil, Majajay, Luisiana, Cavinti, Lumban, Liliw, Nagcarlan, Alaminos, Siniloan, and Paete.

Expansion of the areas ensure that the objective of the program which is to upgrade the native carabao for better meat quality and increase milk production is within its reach and may even surpass the program’s target.

One of the effective strategies being implemented by Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) is conduct an orientation on the Artificial Insemination (A.I.) Technology in aims to explain the advantages of upgrading their native carabao and to correct the misconception and issues which hinders the farmers to avail the technology through open forum.

The A.I. Technology prioritizes areas with bigger population of native breeding carabaos and for flung barangays with connected access to upgraded bull.

The PVO is presently conducting an impact assessment of the program through monitoring of calf drop and survey questionnaire. Initial survey in the pilot areas or impact zone yields a very positive result, while for the radiation areas assessment is still going-on.
