PSGDO hosts flag raising ceremony

Provincial Sports and Games Development Office

February 13, 2018

The Provincial Sports and Games Development Office (PSGDO) hosted the weekly flag raising ceremony on Monday, 05 February 2018 at the provincial capitol Time Plaza. PSGDO Head Mr. Gerardo S. Cantada reported on the accomplishments of the office for the past year as follows:

SPORTS DEVELOPMENT
The Provincial Sports and Games Development Office is the satellite office under the Governor's Office mandated to implement the sports programs of the province.

Under the leadership of Governor Ramil L. Hernandez, the PSGDO continues to implement year-round grassroots sports development programs to develop future sports champions from Laguna and cultivate a vibrant sports culture among Laguneños.

Our sports development efforts include the:
-          conduct of clinics and local tournaments
-          participation in higher level competitions
-          and program coordination with local and national sports authorities and associations like the Philippine Sports Commission and the newly re-established Philippine Sports Institute

Focused in reaching more athletes in various sports disciplines, last 2017, PSGDO conducted its series of annual Gov. Ramil L. Hernandez Free Summer Sports Clinics in 9 sports disciplines in various cities and municipalities of Laguna. The participation in these sports clinics tripled compared in the previous years in which we only offered 6 sports clinics.

Four grassroots level Governor’s Cup was conducted in Chess, Futsal, Swimming, and Taekwondo which served as culmination of the summer sports clinics.

The 5th Governor’s Cup was the highly anticipated Laguna Inter-LGU Basketball Tournament which was participated by 26 cities and municipalities. This year, we recorded a better turnout of participating teams.

All these major activities hadgreater participation in 2017 than in the previous years for we have increased the number of governor’s cup and sports clinics.

Last year, Laguna was one of the first in the country to include finswimming in its sports programs. The Philippine Finswimming Federation, Inc. (PFFI) launched finswimming in Laguna by conducting lessons, seminar and licensing exam to our athletes and coaches. They also provided equipment to selected athletes to ensure the continuity of the program. Finswimming is an aquatic sport which is widely known in European countries and is played in international and continental tournaments such as the South East Asian Games.

Last October, 130 athletes in 10 sporting events represented the province in the Philippine Sports Commission’s BatangPinoy Luzon Qualifying Leg in Vigan City. It is in these kinds of competitions that we can measure the effectiveness of our sport development efforts and strategies. Laguna out of 126 participating LGUs, ranked 2nd overall and brought home 97 medals (43 gold, 22 silver, and 32 bronze). This is despite competing with bigger delegations. Baguio City the overall champion sent almost 400 athletes, while the third in ranking, Pangasinan Province, sent 200 athletes.

The qualifying leg was joined by more than 6000 athletes. Our medalists and qualifiers will be advancing to the national finals this 2018.

SPORTS EVENTS
Aside from developmental programs, PSGDO also holds sports events that can unite our communities and inspire our fellow Lagunenos to play sports and live an active lifestyle. Some of our sports event included the 2017 Anilag Festival Body Building Competition, Traditional Games or PalarongPinoy, the Laguna InterLGUBasketball Tournament and the PGL Civil Service Sports Fest.

Our major sports programs and activities alonehave reached and directly benefited more than 4632 athletes in 17 sports disciplines including 18 indigenous games.

ADMINISTRATION OF SPORTS COMPLEX

Aside from sports development, PSGDO is also in-charge of the administration of the 19-hectare Laguna Sports Complex. Our sports complex currently has 9 operational sports facilities and fields which are being maintained by 19 maintenance personnel.

In 2017, the province hosted the Department of Education’s 2017 Regional Sports Competition, formerly known as the Southern Tagalog CALABARZON Athletic Association (STCAA) and welcomed more than 2500 athletes from 20 schools division at the Laguna Sports Complex.

With the Laguna Sports Complex as its main playing venue, PSGDO took charge of the venue preparation and venue requirements for the solidarity meeting, refresher courses, trainings and tournament proper. We also assisted the Division Office in identifying possible playing venues in nearby cities and municipalities.

The province also hosted the Philippine Football Federation and Philippine Gaming Corporation’s Regional Football Festival which was joined by 17 football teams in the region and was attended by former Azkals Team Captain and National Team Coach Mr. ChiefyCaligdong.

PSGDO, in coordination with the Provincial Administrator’s Office and the Provincial Treasurer’s Office also accommodates venue requests for sports and non-sports activities and implements the imposition of fees for the use of facilities and equipment at the Laguna Sports Complex.

Last year, we have accommodated a total of 159 approved requests. We also opened the fitness gym to the public and hascurrently registered 462 annual and monthly members. This aside from the “per session fitness gym users”.

Indeed, 2017 has been a fruitful year for us. Through the support of the Provincial Government of Laguna under Governor Ramil L. Hernandez, the Provincial Sports and Games Development Office remains steadfast in implementing sports development programs that can create opportunities and make a difference in the lives of our young athletes. Sports development is no easy task because champions are not made overnight.

Investing in sports is investing in our future. No wonder progressive nations know this because sports can transform individuals, bring communities together and inspire social change. The young athletes that we are developing now will become the country’s future citizens and leaders. Sports isessential in character formation and in nation-building for sports equip our children with valuable life lessons and experiences that can make them champions in life.
